WELCOME BACK ! We are anticipating another great year for scholarships and extracurricular activities. The guidance newsletter is a necessity for seniors seeking scholarship opportunities. For the underclassmen, the guidance newsletter will help you in finding activities related to your academic and career interests. If you have any questions throughout the year, please come by or call the guidance office @ 389-8628.

 

First Freedom Student Competition

-This essay contest offers 9th – 12th grade students and opportunity to compete for a $3,000, $1,500 and $750 award.

-The essay will address the topic: “Free exercise is an essential component of the First Amendment’s definition of religious freedom. What did free exercise mean when it was first ratified and became part of the Constitution? How is it interpreted today? Is the free exercise or religion adequately protected in America’s public schools today?”

Morehead Scholarship at UNC Chapel Hill

Any senior wanting to self-nominate for this scholarship may get information in the guidance office.  Mrs. Nicholson has information on the steps you must take to go through this process. Please let Mrs. Nicholson know if you are interested by September 17.

 

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

-Describe a volunteer, self-initiated community service activity performed after 9/1/06

-Grades 9-12

-Apply online at www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/prudential , print it out by October 31, 2007

-Return copy of application to Mrs. Nicholson by 3:00 p.m. on or before October 31, 2007

-One selected to represent Hayesville High School

 

Questbridge College Match Scholarship

-High school seniors who have achieved excellent academic results in the face of economic challenges are encouraged to apply

-Due September 30, 2007

-Available online at www.questbridge.org

 

SunTrust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes

-$1,000 scholarship plus a $100 SunTrust Visa gift card

-One winner every two weeks beginning October 31, 2007 through May 15, 2008

-Apply online at www.suntrusteducation.com  starting September 14, 2007

Tri-County Community College-College Day

-Wednesday, September 19, from 9:30 - 12:00 p.m. Admission representatives from many colleges in North Carolina and surrounding areas will available to answer questions.

- Seniors need to have their permission forms for this activity to Mrs. Nicholson by Friday, September 14, 2007.

 

UNC-Greensboro Merit Scholarship

 -Various scholarships available

-Admission to UNC-G by January 4, 2008

-SAT score of 1200 or above or ACT of 27

-GPA of 3.5 or above

-You can apply on-line at www.uncg.edu/fia

-Some applications are available in the guidance office

-Must be received by January 4, 2008

 

Univision 40’s Nuestra Juventud

-For Hispanic seniors

-Seven $500 scholarships for the college or university of their choice

-Accepting applications up to October 5, 2007

 

Wendy's High School Heisman Scholarship

-Seniors must have at least a “B” average and participate in at least one varsity sport

-This award is based on three criteria: academic excellence, community service, and athletic achievement

-All applicants must let Mrs. Nicholson know by September 25, 2007
