English IV Policies-L. Barrett

But words are things; and a small drop of ink, falling, like dew, upon a thought, produces that which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think.

Lord Byron

EXPECTATIONS

v  Follow all rules in student handbook and take responsibility for your actions.

v  Be well prepared, in your seat, and ready to begin class when bell rings.  If you must leave the room after the bell rings to retrieve items you will receive break detention.

v  Be courteous to all, including me.  This includes no sleeping and no interrupting others.

v  Absolutely no food or drinks allowed in classroom.  If I see it, you will throw it away.

v  No cell phones, iPods or other devices allowed at any time.

CONSEQUENCES OF NOT FOLLOWING RULES AND PROCEDURES

1.      Verbal warning

2.      Break detention

3.      Office referral

Þ  Certain behaviors automatically referred to office immediately.

Grades:

1.      Grading is based on scores of unit tests, projects, and essays (70%) and quiz grades (30%-includes class work & homework).  No extra credit is offered, as it is unnecessary if assigned work is completed.  You may redo most essays.

2.      The due date for work will be clearly stated.  Late work will be accepted only as a result of an absence; however, this excludes assignments that the student was already aware existed.  Absolutely no projects will be accepted late-it must be turned in on time even if the student is absent, so make arrangements to have it brought in if necessary.

3.      Major test dates will be set several days ahead of time; therefore, a student should be ready to take the test the day it is given if he/she is present.  Students absent on test day may make up the test as stated in the student handbook, but it is the student’s responsibility to find out and arrange to make up the work within the allotted time frame. Under normal conditions students absent the day before the test who are present the day of the test will be required to take the test as the student will have missed no new concepts.

4.      Help is available before or after school, but please make an appointment first.

5.      Tardies/Absences: The handbook is rigidly followed so all are treated fairly.  It is the student’s responsibility to get assignments after an absence; please ask when I will have time to discuss the assignment(s) with you.
