Welcome to English II

Fall Semester 2005

 

English II has a focus on world literature and writing.  You will be reading a variety of literature including novels, dramas, short stories, and poetry.  You will also learn a variety of effective writing techniques and will complete a writing keepsake that will include poetry, journals, oral histories, narrative essays, expository essays, persuasive essays, descriptive essays, and a research paper.

 

Requirements:

            You will need two 11/2 inch or 2 inch binders.  You will need one binder for class on a daily basis.  This notebook should be divided into the following sections:  notes, essays, journals, vocabulary, and miscellaneous. You will receive a notebook grade each six weeks based on organization, neatness, and completeness. You must have the second binder for your writing portfolio/keepsake, which will be due at the beginning of the third six weeks. You will also find it helpful to have an IBM floppy disk on which to save your writing.

 

Classroom Policies:

  1. Be on time.  Come prepared with the proper materials.
  2. Be enthusiastic!!  Be creative!!  Expect to have fun!!
  3. Make sure you make regular positive contributions to class.
  4. Complete all assignments on time.
  5. Absolutely no eating or drinking in class. 

 

Grading Policy:

 

Test grades = 50%

Quiz grades = 33%

Homework = 17%

Final Exam = 25% of semester grade

Research paper = 2 test grades for third six weeks

Writing portfolio/keepsake = 2 test grades for third six weeks

North Carolina Writing Assessment = All tenth grade students will take the NC writing assessment in March.  This class will prepare you to score at least a 3 on this assessment if you do your best.  All tenth grade students are also required to take the tenth grade reading comprehensive test in April.  Again, this class will help to prepare you to do well on that test. 

 

* Assignments will not be accepted late.  You must make up work missed within two days following an absence. You may earn 1 extra credit quiz grade by presenting pieces of writing 6 times per six weeks.
